Moxie Memorizers

Can you believe it's February?! Time flies when you are memorizing scripture! I hope that each of you had great success in memorizing the verses you committed to take into your heart and mind for January. If it was difficult, don't be discouraged. This is a discipline. It takes time and training. Stay the course and God will richly bless you!

I'm switching things up a bit. From now on I will be posting the Moxie Memorizers posts on the 1st and the 15th. You need to comment with the verse you are focusing on for the next two weeks. This will increase our accountability to one another. Are any of you quoting your verses to your friends out loud? This is also a great way to incorporate help. God knew what he was doing when he made us to live in community.

A couple of tips:
  • Be sure you are working to memorize the reference. As I memorize a new verse, I break it into phrases and say the reference before and after each phase, gradually increasing the phrases until I have them down. For instance, "John 3:16. For God so loved John 3:16.... John 3:16 For God so love the world John 3:16" I do that over and over and over until I've got it.
  • A verse here and there is a great way to start, but if you would like a little more challenge take a whole section of scripture and memorize it in context. Right now I'm working on James 3:13-18. I wanted the whole section in my heart.
  • Don't forget to review what you learn. If you don't, you will probably forget it. I once knew the preamble to the constitution, but never really reviewed it so it's pretty much gone. It only takes a couple of minutes to review what you've learned. Let me know if you need help with a review system.
I've heard from a lot of you how exciting it is to read through everyones verses. There are about 35 of us who are participating publicly in this journey. If we all stay committed (which I'll bug you if you try and drop out) by the end of the year we will have a total of about 800 verse memorized as a group. That's pretty amazing!

This is what I'm working on for the next two weeks:

James 3:17-18 But wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure, then peace-love, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness." NIV

Thanks for reminding us to review because the scripture I'm working on for February used to be a memorized one. But I'm going to learn it again and add on to it. I know I've told you this multiple times, but i'm going to say it again..I love this!!! Initially I was one of those who was like, "Eh, I don't need to post it here. I'll participate, but I'll just do it on my own". There's something to be said about getting past the pride, opening myself up to accountability, and being a part of this on here. So here's mine:
Romans 12:1,2
Therefore, I urge you, brethren, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. I love how the "harvest of righteousness" links to the wording of Hosea 10:12! As soon as Chad started talking about this passage a couple weeks ago, I knew it was something I needed planted deep in my heart. --Tia

I just had to put this one to heart when I read "unforced rhythms of grace." Doesn't that just resonate in your soul?!

Galatians 5:13-14 (esv)

I'm excited for this verse. I think Jesus wants to teach me what it means to serve through love. :)

This is a huge transition/waiting time in my life and if I don't humble myself and give up my anxieties to him, I will not be showing my trust in his plan for me.

I picked this verse because it's really helping and reminding me that i get my worth and value from Jesus Christ. I don't need to keep the old lies of my life alive, but I can let them go and Jesus will raise me up!

I recently came across this verse I've heard of many times before. It really holds meaning for me in this season right now. I've just been so incredibly tired and exhausted. I plan on being worn out before I ever feel tired. But, if I give my strength into what I'm doing, and what God has for me at this point in time, then I will reap His strength. This month as I leap into this scripture I am going to expect a harvest of strength in my life, as I serve God.

1 John 3:19-21
By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God.

This verse I have turned to many times when I am doubting myself. It always reminds me that God is greater than my heart but also that I can have confidence before him. God is teaching me right now to truly focus on what he wants me to be doing rather than what everyone else desires. When I follow others desires I feel like that is when my heart condemns me, but when I seek and obey the Lord he gives my heart confidence.

And then - do I value my own opinion more than the solid comfort of knowing God's love for me? I want to dedicate my life to LOVING GOD, and the knowledge I have will be used for love's sake.
