Moxie Memorizers

Tuesday, November 01, 2011  ::

Two more months and we will have completed a YEAR of our scripture memory journey. For some of you, that means four more verses and you will have met your goal. Some of you decided to memorize more than two verses a month...maybe you are right on schedule or maybe you need to get a move on to meet your goal. Wherever you are in this journey, I know that if you have consistently taken scripture into your heart, you are not the same as when you started. Never forget that His word is living and active!

About a month ago I felt pretty certain that I would not reach my goal. Thankfully, through His grace in increasing my memory capacity, I'm on schedule. I've already began to ask Jesus to show me how to start out 2012. Should it be scripture that focuses on worshipping Him? Should it be instructional? Should it be encouragement? Should it include vision for the future? I cannot wait to see how He will have me start the year!

But, I'm getting ahead of myself in this post....back to November.

I'm still in Romans 12.  For the next two weeks I will be taking verses 16 and 17.

Romans 12:16-17

Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.

I'm really loving this chapter. It is so rich with instruction, guidance, and wisdom. What are you memorizing? Is it coming easily or has it been difficult? Did you know that discipline is easy for some and difficult for others but no one is excused? Think about that if you are struggling.

Stay the course, friends! You are almost there for this year! Four more verses! You can do it!!

Post away!

I spoke to my recently widowed grandmother the other day, and she quoted this verse as one that she is living on right now. I was truly inspired, and it made me love the verse all the more!

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8

OK, my first time posting! I've been excited. Over the last two weeks, I learned:

Matthew 4:4 - It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'

Hebrews 10:23-25 - Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him, endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

And a couple weeks ago, my son came home from school and confessed, "Mom, I think I paid evil for evil." Ha. He's 6. He doesnt know the verse exactly, but he gets the concept!

Psalm 46:10 NIV

Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.

I am so not disciplined...what usualy happens is that throughout the week I find all sorts of amazing scripture to hang on to. It's hard to focus on just one! This one has been one that I've gone back to for the past two weeks. As I grow in my devotion for Jesus, I am reminded to leave all other idols behind!
Isaiah 44:6-8
"I am the first and the last-There is no other God. Who is like me? Let him step forward and prove to you his power! Let him do as I have done since ancient times when I established a people and proclaimed its future. Do NOT tremble! Do NOT be afraid! Did I not proclaim my purposes for you long ago? You are my witnesses-Is there any other God? NO! There is n other Rock! Not one!"

Isaiah 40:1-2, ESV
Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sin.

I am going to keep working on my verses from the end of October.
2 Cor. 9:6&7
"The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

I am also going to be reviewing Psalm 23. This is one I learned as a young child, but bits and pieces of it have been coming to mind over the past few days and I'm realizing I don't have it solidly memorized anymore. Looking forward to internalizing both these scriptures further! :)

Running and training has brought insight to my understanding of discipline. I don't want to lose those, so I'm going to start with 1 Corinthians 9:23-24 and add the next two verses at the end of the month.

"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable."

Memorising scripture is something that I have thought I should do for a long time, but I have never got round to doing it in an organised way.
Have you ever blogged about any tips to help you remember them?

Proverbs 31: 10-12
An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. the heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good an dnot harm, all the days of her life.

Upon my recent engagement, I felt it would be good to start learning what the Bible says about being a wife.

A while back I memorized Psalm 119:11 which talks about hiding His word in our hearts that we might not sin against Him. Now I want to add in the 2 verses leading up to it as they capture my desire to seek Him with all my heart and acknowledge my need of Him to not stray from His commands.

Psalm 119:9-10
How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.

Still working on Psalm 63. To be honest scripture memory has been kicking my butt these days but I'm learning that it is going to require me to buckle down and be super disciplined so that is what I am looking to do this month.

I'm with Kelly - there are so many other wonderful verses to focus on and carry with me for a day or a week that I neglect those that I want to actively memorize. I've only added one more to Philippians:

1:14
"Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly."

A good verse though. I've been thinking a lot about following Christ. If I am unwilling to follow him in the hard or unpleasant places, then I cannot call myself a "Christ-follower". But God has his glory in mind, and he is so right to do so! I think of the early church rejoicing that they could take part in the sufferings of Christ. Am I a defender of God's glory? Or do I seek only to proclaim him while maintaining some degree of my own glory? The difference is astounding, but I am encouraged by Paul and his joy that the glory of God could be shown in his hardships.

Sorry to be a late poster. Like Tori, this semester is kicking my tush like no other. So I'm still on 1 Timothy 4:8-12, but I only have 10-12 to go! Thanks ladies!

Ok, here I go. My first time posting. I am not part of the "Moxie" group, but I have know Angel for a lot of years and love and respect her constant pursuit of God and His glory.

I am memorizing 2 Timothy 2 with my son. His name, Kaden, means warrior and it is amazing how our children reflect the names we give them!! 2 Timothy 2 is about being a good soldier in Christ, and I hope putting the Word in his mind will transform His heart when God draws him near. We are on verse 8 this week and verse 9 next week. Here they are:
"Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, (9) for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound!" (2 Timothy 2:8-9)

Thanks for letting me share!

I chose my verses for this month but forgot to actually post them! I'm beginning a new passage and I'm not sure when I will finish it. But I'm ok if it runs into the beginning of the new year. Going to work on Isaiah 40 verses 21-31.

Verses 21-22 for these first two weeks:
"Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in."

Pslam 119:36-37

Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not of selfish gain! Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.

Revelations 3:1-2

... I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your works complete in the sight of my God.
